A duchess with a big heart, Sofia is the Russian princess, a descendant of Catherine of Russia, who restored the castle to the Odescalchi family and rebuilt the village by opening hospitals, churches and schools. The princess' philanthropic spirit finds its expression here in Bracciano. Once she arrived with her husband, the Duke Odescalchi, she fell in love with the village and its inhabitants. She uses her enormous wealth to help the people and breathe new life into the town. The hospital still bears the plaque commemorating the foundation by the Russian Duchess and her portraits can be found in the museums of Bracciano and Rome. When she felt homesick for faraway Russia, she used to retire to this house, and losing herself in the beauty of the landscape, she would find the strength to dedicate herself to her new life and to her beloved people.
