History

That of the Princesse des Ursins is one of the most fascinating stories of the time. The young French lady, with her sharp mind and fiery character, married Flavio Orsini, Duke of Bracciano, and moved into the castle with him. Even at this time she used to hide in this room, far from the prying eyes of the palace, to attend to her secret correspondences with France and Spain. When Flavio died, Maria inherited his entire fortune. A free and independent woman, she took the title Princesse des Ursins and became a key figure in diplomacy, working closely with the Neapolitan and Spanish nobility. Later, with her profound influence, she played a crucial role in arranging the marriage of Philip of France to Princess Marie Louise of Savoy and became one of the most influential figures in the Spanish Court of Philip V.
