History

Napoleon Orsini fought valiantly in the lands between Florence and Milan, and the strength of his sword carried him as far as the Kingdom of Naples. Tales of his victories reached the ears of Pope Pius II, who decided to make him Papal Captain General. Like any great hero, he was not without enemies. The Orsini, Colonna, Borgia and Anguillara families were formidable adversaries. It was in this suite that the Duke took refuge after his great defeat, where he was wounded in battle trying in vain to save his son from capture. Behind the armour of this warrior was a heart that beat for his land and his people. And so it was that in 1470 the construction of the majestic Bracciano Castle began, a vital centre and military stronghold that has hosted dignitaries and popes and still dominates the town today.
